Have you tried contacting any rescue groups in your area? I doubt the dog will be free, but it won’t be terribly expensive.
Understand that even “free” dogs cost plenty of money in routine care, feeding, vaccinations, etc.

Look in the RSPCA/Dogs’ Trusts near you. It’s near Christmas so you’ll find lots of mixes or purebreds in January/February time.
